Album of the Week – Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Dream Theater is a band that is off the metal path yet has so many metalheads are part of their fan base. When you ask the average metalhead about Dream Theater they are either ecstatic about the band or never really heard them. There isn’t a lot in between. Personally, Dream Theater is one of my favorite bands of all-time and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is right at the top of my favorite DT albums.
The track listing for Six Degrees is:
– CD 1
–The Great Debate
–Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
—II. About to Crash
—III. War Inside My Head
—IV. The Test That Stumped Them All
—V. Goodnight Kiss
—VI. Solitary Shell
—VII. About to Crash (Reprise)
—VIII. Losing Time/Grand Finale
The Great Debate is probably my favorite songs on the CD. It tackles a hot issue in American society which is stem cell research. The Test That Stumped Them All is perhaps on of DT’s heaviest songs. With Six degrees you get a bit of everything with Dream Theater. Goodnight Kiss is a very slow and emotional. This is a well crafted album; a great one for any Dream Theater fan, but also a good start for any potentially new DT fan.
The picture on the right still features former drummer Mike Portnoy. There is much speculation about the new drummer; I haven’t seen much information on that or any official release. There have been some DT posts on Facebook though about how excited DT is about the album and how anxious they are for its release. I too am very anxious to see what they put out without Portnoy.
This week I have been listening to Six Degrees like it’s the last album in the world. I am not sure what sparked that, but who am I to complain? I thought it would be a great album of the week; the first for DT to appear on our list. For those of you, like me, who live in the UK you can catch DT headlining the High Voltage festival 24 July in London at Victoria Park. http://www.highvoltagefestival.com/line-up/full-artist-line-up/
If you have this album I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. If you are thinking of being a DT fan please wait no more. My only request is that when you pop in a DT album for the first time make sure there are no distractions and you actually have time to “listen” to it. So give yourself a good hour and let it rip. You won’t regret it. Here are some links to YouTube videos. I am so glad these are available…DT is so hard to catch on TV.

Rite of Passage Live at Download 2009 (You can see me in this video if you freeze it at 6:38. I am at the very bottom off-center to the left. I have a bald head and sunglasses on. It looks like I am one of the only bald guys around me…anyway…it was a great show).
