Monday Metal Madness: Black Sabbath: Ozzy or Dio?

In their long and storied career, besides practically inventing this genre of heavy music we all love to death, Black Sabbath have employed 2 of metal’s best and most prolific vocalists.  John ‘Ozzy’ Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio.  Not too shabby.  Both were excellent fits for the band and they also brought different flavors for the rest of the band to play off of.  So, fans of Black Sabbath, I ask you, which is your favorite Sabbath vocalist.  Do you prefer the doom-y beginnings of Sabbath or the high-flying later years of the band.  Tough choice, I know, lol.  Enjoy!  Peace Love and Metal!!

  1. Didn’t even have to think about that one, Matt – it’s Ozzy all the way. Dio was a great singer for sure but the run of classic albums from Paranoid to Sabotage basically define Sabbath for me. They put out some good songs over the years but were never that consistent again album-wise. When Dio quit (the first time) it really ought to have been the Iommi band. Wasn’t much moved by Gillan, Gillen or Martin, either – most of what I heard in recent years has been pretty execrable, H&H included, so there’s some trepidation for me over what this new studio recording will have to offer. I’m not expecting much, to be honest but let’s see, eh?!
