Reggie’ Top 100 Favorite Albums of All Time #50-46
Posted by WarpRider
As we journey down the path to my number 1 favorite album of all time, you will more than likely see some classic metal albums. Many of these albums have been my favorites for years while some are relatively new….only came into my life in the last couple of years. This all-time list is an ongoing effort started by our friends at The History of Metal page on facebook. Each day we list another album until we get to the end which should take us just up to the end of the year. Below is my next list of five as we near our way to the top.
#50 – From Afar – Ensiferum
This was probably my first sample of folk-metal and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction. Shortly after hearing this album for the first time I had a chance to see them open for Children of Bodom. They put on a great show and they have been on some sort of regular rotation on my music player ever since. I think they infuse folk into their brand of metal without going over-the-top; just the right amount. Since From Afar, I have back purchased Vic tory Songs and also still look to get their latest release, though it’s hard to find on CD…will probably have to step up online.
#49 – Obsolete – Fear Factory
I really enjoyed this album. I thought it was a great follow-up from Demanufacture. I think they matured a bit in their song writing and creation. They explored a few new avenues with Obsolete that I think they took too far on subsequent releases…hence, I this was the last album I truly loved from Fear Factory. One of my favorite songs on this album that had lots of play time was Resurrection. By the time I saw them live for the first time, this was the album they were supporting…which probably boosted my appreciation for this album a bit more. These songs are quite crushing at 120 decibel.
#48 – Blackwater Park – Opeth
I have only been listening to Opeth for a few years now. They are now easily one of my top 10 bands of all time. If I didn’t limit the amount of albums per band on this list, I think there would be about five Opeth albums on this representing my top 100 albums. Blackwater Park is sometimes regarded as one of their best albums for which I would not argue, though I think Ghost Reveries is better. One of my favorite Opeth songs is on this album which happens to be one of the slowest, Harvest. I love the depth this band has.
#47 – Escape – Journey
I can’t say I am a huge fan of Journey, but damn this album is full of some of their biggest classics including the all-time 6th grade dance song, Open Arms…the one Mariah Carey butchered (IMO). I remember when this was hugely popular with my older brothers, so I definitely got my fair dose of Journey when I was quite young and it stuck with me ever since. Of course, thanks to the show Glee, there has been resurgence in Journey’s popularity. The only time I saw them live is with their new singer for which if you were a blind man at a Journey show, you might think Steve Perry was back with the band.
The almighty Anthrax! If this band has one thing going for them it’s their live show. They are one of the most energetic bands out there despite their age. They are one of the Big Four which some people might dispute, but they are a cool rocking Thrash metal band none the less. I think whether you prefer Bush or Belladonna, Anthrax has something for you. I think most metal fans would agree that Among the Living is really a kick-ass Anthrax album and probably their best.
