Book Reviews: A Song of Ice and Fire – George R.R. Martin

This is a repost of a review of the series I wrote some years ago.  I know some of the info is a bit dated, but it still gets the point across and is spoiler free ;)

So, what is A Song of Ice and Fire?  Well to put it simply, it is a still continuing fantasy novel series written by George R.R. Martin.  Four books in the series have been released, A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, and A Feast for Crows and there are another three in the works which are expected to be titled A Dance with Dragons, The Winds of Winter, and A Dream of Spring.  Each book runs about 800-1200 pages in paperback with smaller print.  So, why would one want to spend months reading massive books of an incomplete fantasy series?  Well, let me tell you why.

Metal of Ice and Fire Pt. III

Metal of Ice and Fire Pt. 2

OK, time for part 2 of Metal of Ice and Fire(part 1 here).  Again this is going to be totally random characters and houses and if you’re not familiar with the world of A Song of Ice and Fire I can not recommend enough going to your local bookstore(or Amazon) and picking up the series.  If at minimum check out the series on HBO(congrats to Peter Dinklage for winning the Emmy for best supporting actor for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister, it was well deserved).  Oh, and for those who haven’t read or watched, SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This little venture is turning out slightly more difficult than I had imagined, I would have thought finding a song about incest without necrophilia wouldn’t be too difficult in the realm of metal, maybe I need to become more well versed in the world of death metal, lol.  If you have any suggestions on any of your favorite characters and which song fits them drop a line in the comments, if I use it in an upcoming post you will be credited.  Part 3 coming sooner rather than later(I hope), hope you all enjoy!!!  Valar Morghulis!!!

Metal of Ice and Fire Pt. I

[Update: Click these links for Part 2 and Part 3.  And if you happen to come across any dead Youtube links let me know so I can update them ;) ]
When I first picked up the first book in the Song of Ice and Fire series A Game of Thrones I was immediately hooked.  George R.R. Martins dark but lively realm of Westeros completely sucked me in and I haven’t been able to look at another book the same again.  Then in some time I had heard that it had be optioned to be brought to reality in the form of a TV show.  Like any good fantasy nerd I was outraged that the name Peter Jackson wasn’t attached to it and the integrity of my favorite novels would be compromised, then I learned that TV series masters HBO would be behind the production along with the author himself, my rage subsided and turned into intrigue.  Over the production I kept tabs on what was going on on the making of the show and as it went on my intrigue turned to pure excitement.  The first season of Game of Thrones is now finished and as a massive fan of the books, I can say I am extremely pleased with the outcome with only a few nitpick(more direwolves!!!), HBO and co. went above and beyond the call of duty in the realization of George R.R. Martins world.  Now HBO is reaping the rewards of hard work paid off with tons of award nominations(if Peter Dinklage doesn’t win every award he’s been nominated for, heads are going to roll) and having one of the highest watched and positively reacted to cable TV shows ever by both fans of the books and critics.

So, how does a TV show fit into metal, well, the story and world are metal in their own right, swords, winter, epic battles, betrayal, “the others”, ravens, ect.  And the other day I came across this article where The Sword frontman J.D. Cronise talks about his love for the book series where he states “The Targaryens probably listen to power metal, and the Greyjoys definitely listen to black metal.”  That got the gears in my head turning.  What would all the houses and different characters in ASOIAF listen to, what would be their theme songs(like when a WWF wrestler comes out to music before his match, what would ASOIAF characters come out to).  So what I am doing is making a list of different characters and families and peoples of the realm of Westeros and the metal song that I think fits them best, whether it be lyrically or the atmosphere of the song captures them.  I will do my best to include as many as possible, but since there are literally hundreds of characters in the series catching them all will be a bit difficult, so if you see a character that is not listed, let me know in the comments and what metal song you think fits them best.  Also there will be a part 2 coming in the future.  And maybe when this whole little project is done I’ll get around to organizing it a bit, for now it will be a bit random.

SPOILER WARNING!!!!  If you have never read A Song of Ice and Fire or watched Game of Thrones, go out now and do so.  I can not stress enough how amazing they are, especially the books.  And I will try to keep this as spoiler free as possible but may make some references allusions to characters and events up to book 4, A Feast for Crows.(Book 5, A Dance with Dragons just a few mere weeks away!!!!! Fanboygasm).  So you may want to skip the descriptions if you don’t want anything spoiled.
