Seven Glam Bands a- Laying

Four Crying Birds
Three French Bands
Two Headless Doves
And an Opeth in a pear tree
Besides starting a massive wave of uber-cheesy bad boy love ballads and countless songs about ‘having a good time’, the glam metal bands of the 80′s got laid, a lot, a real lot. Even though they were covered in lipstick, hairspray, and were more sparkly than a modern-day excuse for a vampire, they were swimming in a deluge of vagina.

One source of inspiration that makes many reprisals in metal is J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic high fantasy tale, Lord of the Rings. Really, it fit’s the genre perfectly with subject matter ranging from acts of heroism and epic battles to loss and pure evil. Here’s 5 songs based off the LOTR world.

The 12 Days of Metalmas: Day 4: Four Crying Birds

Four crying birds

The original lyrics to the song sing ‘four collie birds’ for this part of the song. If you’ve ever wondered what the hell a collie bird is, it’s simply a common blackbird. When we put a space in ‘blackbird’ it becomes black bird and one of the most famous birds of the black color is the raven. In Norse mythology Odin had a pair of ravens named Hugin and Munin who would travel to the human world and report its daily happenings to Odin. Amon Amarth’s song “Cry of the Black Birds” tells of a battle where a general tells his men to let Odin’s ravens tell of the battle they are about to fight they fought valiantly and bravely.

Besides being one of the most revered heavy metal musicians, Ozzy Osbourne is also quite famous for the time he bit the head off a dove. “After signing his first solo career record deal he came in to meet some of the people who worked there. His plan was to release the doves into the air to get people to notice him, but when no one noticed, he changed his plans. He grabbed one dove, bit its head off, then spit the head out. Then with blood still dripping from his lips a security guard came to remove him and on the way out he bit the head off of another dove.”
