Reggie’s Top 25 Favorite Cover Songs – #4 Lack of Comprehension
Posted by plantera7
Lack of Comprehension is the song that got me to Death…the band, not the thing we all have in common. Up to that point, I thought Death Metal was a bit complex and I just wasn’t quite there yet as a metalhead. It was a bit extreme for my fragile little mind. Then I came across Human which had much more of a melodic touch than other Death Metal bands I sampled at the time. The whole Human album, actually, I thought was hard-driving, melodic, and was single-handedly responsible for all of my future endeavors in Death Metal music. This influential band released some amazing music and paved the way for the genre as a whole. I still spin Human quite regularly.
Norway’s Susperia, recorded their cover version of Lack of Comprehension in 2005. You can find it on their EP Devil May Care which also has covers from WASP and A-ha. Susperia hasn’t released a studio album since 2009, but they have released another EP, Nothing Remains, in 2011. That EP features a song that the band tried to use to get on the Eurovision Song Contest, but lost before being able to win their home country and move on to the big show.
Here is the cover of Lack of Comprehension found on the EP Devil May Care.
And, here is the awesome track from Death. You can find this song on the album Human released in 1991.

Album Review – Susperia – We Are The Ones
Posted by plantera7
Norway’s Susperia is one of those bands you might not have heard of. They started creating music along the lines of black/thrash. It’s an interesting blend to say the least. The two original founding members (not together) were once part of Dimmu Borgir and Satyricon. The rest of Susperia’s music is a bit thrash, symphonic, and a little death all wrapped up into an eclectic mix, however leaving the “black” mostly behind and moving over to more “power” metal.
Their latest album, We Are The Ones, is not a new studio album, but a collaboration of older works, orchestral versions of Susperia music, and two new songs. One of the new songs, Nothing Remains, is currently in the running as Norway’s entry into the Eurovision Song Contest. I hope to see them rocking out Eurovision next year. The contest needs some quality metal to balance out the pop from other parts of Europe.

Song of the Week – Nothing Remains
Posted by plantera7
I decided to post this a day early because I have other plans for a Wednesday post…
My brain has been absorbing so much new music lately that I decided to go back and listen to a band that I was introduced to a few years ago. Unfortunately, I haven’t really made enough time to actually sit down and “listen” to them…until today. Susperia has been around for about 10 years. They hail from Norway and comprise band members from other bands you may have heard of such as Dimmu Borgir and Satyricon. Since this is just the song of the week, I won’t get into a deep history of the band just yet, but this may be a project sometime in the future.

Awesome Covertunes
Posted by plantera7
It’s always nice when a band plays tribute to some of their influences. So I’ve compiled a list of 10 covertunes that are really, really, really wicked good. Personally, covertunes should be done one of two ways; either cover the song exactly for what how it was intended or completely remake it, but keep it at least recognizable as a tribute song. Anywhere in the middle is usually blah…
So here is my list of 10 covertunes that bring an older song back to life.
Bullet For My Valentine – Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - Original by Metallica
Faith No More – Easy - Original by The Commodore’s
Five Finger Death Punch - Bad Company - Original by Bad Company
Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver - Original by Dio
Machine Head - Hallowed Be Thy Name - Original by Iron Maiden
Trivium – Master of Puppets - Original by Metallica
Chimaira – Disposable Heroes - Original by Metallica
Hatebreed – Ghost of War - Original by Slayer
The Bronx Casket Company – My Way - Original by Frank Sinatra
DevilDriver – Wasted Years - Original by Iron Maiden
It looks to me like a good pool of songs to cover were originally recorded by either Metallica or Iron Maiden. There are many more covertunes that could have made this list, but these are the ones that stuck out for me the most. I could probably easily redo this list with 10 other songs. You know what, lets extend it out five more songs…here goes.
Susperia – Lack of Comprehension - Original by Death
Machine Head – Message in a Bottle - Original by The Police
Queensryche – Synchronicity II - Original by The Police
Children of Bodom – Hell is for Children - Original by Pat Benetar
Dream Theater – Comfortably Numb - Original by Pink Floyd
If you know more covertunes that deserve special attention please let us know. I’m going to stop now before I go another five…
