Sonic Cathedral’s female-fronted roundup for August

SonC logoMany thanks again to our buddies at Sonic Cathedral for sharing their reviews of the last month. In case you haven’t seen one of these posts before, we do a digest of their reviews. They specialise in rock and metal with female vocalists.

Everyone who is or wants to be anyone in FF rock and metal must, must visit Sonic Cathedral. They have a website/online store and a Facebook page. I don’t know any music site that goes into more depth in its reviews.

AnfelAnfel – Icy World

Label: Chrysella Records

Genre: Gothic doom metal

Language: English

Total tracks: 12

Reviewer: Doctor T.

Sonic Cathedral rating: 9.5 out of 10

Anfel is a new Russian project. The project may be new but they make use of a veteran of the Russian Gothic scene, one of the women from Blackthorn. Doctor T. says, “With a pedigree like that, it’s hard to miss. And this release provides a level of Gothic doom that takes a back seat to no one. It’s dark, it’s beautiful, it’s everything you want in this style of music.”

There is a lot of excitement with the release of this EP by Xandria, and it is well deserved, writes Eastcoaster. Besides showcasing their new vocalist, “Fire & Ashes” shows a band full of energy. The three new songs, two covers, and two remakes are energetic, driving, and well worth the listen.

Chaos MagicChaos Magic – Chaos Magic

Label: Frontiers Records

Language: English

Total tracks: 11

Sonic Cathedral rating: 7 out of 10

Former Stratovarius guitarist Timo Tolkki and vocalist Caterina Nix join forces for a melodic metal project known as Chaos Magic. Taking a back seat from his “guitar god” role, Tolkki gives Caterina the floor, and her voice shines on this album that C. refers to as “a great beginner’s guide to symphonic metal.”

This album, says Eastcoaster, is music storytelling at its prime with all the important ingredients included. Using outstanding vocals by Angelica and Daniel, excellent instrumentalists, a children’s choir, and guest voice actors, this is one album that any music listener, metal or not, will want to have in their library. Sonic Cathedral rating: 10 out of 10

Rolo Tomassi’s stunningly good fourth album, “Grievances”, is a powerful candidate to win at least two accolades from Sonic Cathedral (and Metal State) reviewer Christopher Backeberg. It’s one of his most highly recommended albums of the year so far. He adds that Rolo Tomassi must surely be one the most underrated bands in metal, in spite of the praise they’ve won wherever they’ve performed.

KarnatakaKarnataka – Secrets of Angels

Label: Immrama

Genre: Symphonic progressive rock

Language: English

Total tracks: 8

Reviewer: Doctor T.

Sonic Cathedral rating: 9.5 out of 10

Karnataka is a Welsh sound that captures a segment of the Gothic femme metal scene and does it with British flair. It’s fine music, often based on British themes, and as for the last track, the title cut, Doctor T says: “This one is a 20-minute opus, a gem that does much to define the genre. And this track alone makes the release a must purchase. Great music by a band that’s been around for a while and has provided us a classic.”

About ChristopherMammal

I've made it to Mammal. I still hope to be classified as Human one day. Meanwhile I have evolved enough to recognise different types of music as well as the shrieks of certain vervet monkeys who are known for their scurrilous behaviour in the proximity of unguarded bananas.
