Sonic Cathedral’s female-fronted roundup for Q4, 2015 – Part 1

SonC logoSince I’ve been snarled up in other matters since the end of September I haven’t been posting our monthly digest of Sonic Cathedral reviews. To catch up, today and tomorrow I’ll be posting a two-part digest covering the last three months of this year.

My heartiest thanks go to SC for being patient. The same to you lovely, gentle people who follow Metal State.

If you don’t know it already, SC runs the website and Facebook page for bands with female vocalists. The SC reviews are deep, detailed and knowledgeable. They carry a lot of other great information about the FF scene in metal and rock, too. Go there!

Setanera – New EraSetanera – New Era

Genre: Alternative symphonic metal

Language: English & Italian

Total tracks: 11

Reviewer: Allyson Kennig

Sonic Cathedral rating: 9/10

“‘New Era’ introduces us to the highly melodic, keyboard-centric aspects of Setanera’s direction, along with its nods to the symphonic power metal genre.”

Embassy of Silence – VerisimilitudeEmbassy of Silence – Verisimilitude

Label: Inverse Records

Genre: Prog-related rock/metal

Language: English

Total tracks: 8

Reviewer: Doctor T.

Sonic Cathedral rating: 10/10

“The new Embassy of Silence release provides a continuation of the excellent music and lyrical content for which the band is known. Ines presents some new vocal styles but the thoughts rarely deviate from the over-the-top content for which she is known. And that’s a good thing. Where else can you get the terms ‘butt munch’, ‘ Nietzsche’ and ‘little prick’ in one single track?”

Tarja – Ave Maria en Plein AirTarja – Ave Maria en Plein Air

Label: Ear Music

Genre: Classical

Language: Latin, Spanish, Italian

Total tracks: 11

Reviewer: C.

Sonic Cathedral rating: 9/10

“Tarja Turunen has released the classical album that fans have been waiting for! But in typical Tarja fashion, it’s a little different than you might expect. More than 4,000 versions of the song ‘Ave Maria’ have been recorded, and Tarja puts her spin on 11 of them, as well as a new version entirely written by Tarja herself!”

The Fall of Eve – Eternal EmbraceThe Fall of Eve – Eternal Embrace

Label: Self-released

Genre: Symphonic metal

Language: English

Total tracks: 10

Reviewer: Doctor T.

Sonic Cathedral rating: 9/10

“The Fall of Eve was a big hit at Dames of Darkness earlier this year. Their new release solidifies their position as a solid femme metal sound, one of the few we have heard from Scotland. The band creates their music with some original techniques, but the lyrics and the vocals from our lovely Scottish lass are as good as anyone’s. A new sound, and one we can hope to hear a lot more of.”

UnSeelie – Urban FantasyUnSeelie – Urban Fantasy

Label: Self-released

Genre: Gothic metal

Language: English

Total tracks: 10/10

Reviewer: Doctor T.

Sonic Cathedral rating: 10/10

“Unseelie is a French Gothic project from Paris. The theme is from a literary category and the lyrics include both fantasy and dark Gothic. The music, and there’s a lot of it, is the product of two musicians and is as good as it gets. Well produced, well researched and addressing ideas rare even for this genre. No wonder it gets a 10/10. One of the year’s best releases.”

About ChristopherMammal

I've made it to Mammal. I still hope to be classified as Human one day. Meanwhile I have evolved enough to recognise different types of music as well as the shrieks of certain vervet monkeys who are known for their scurrilous behaviour in the proximity of unguarded bananas.
