Metal and videos, videos and metal, metal videos, it’s Music Video Mania!!!!
You could argue all day whether grunge is or is not metal, but it’s hard to say that it didn’t have a huge impact on the modern metal scene. Last weeks poll found its self with a tie between Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. So congrats to those two pioneering bands!
This week marks the 20th anniversery of one of the most loved metal albums of all time, Vulgar Display of Power by the one and only Pantera. With VDP, the Texas boys reached ‘a new level’ metal superstardom going 2x platinum and garnering vast amounts of praise from countless fans and music journalists. I’m pretty sure that just about everyone who reads this blog is well aware of this album and most likely listened to it countless amounts of times, so this weeks poll will be a 2 parter with a bit of homework attached. First up, which was you favorite music video off of VDP and, second, what was you favorite song off the album. Your homework, go dust off your copy of VDP (where applicable) and rock the f’ out to one of the greatest metal albums of all time. Enjoy!! Peace Love and Metal!!!
If heavy metal had a Mecca right now I would say it is Finland. The cold country seems to be the breeding ground of a myriad of high quality metal bands spanning through many genres. I don’t know what the Finns are drinking (maybe some of that ceremonial thunder brew that was the inspiration for Korpiklaani‘s latest album Ukon Wacka), but if there is one thing that they can do, it’s write some of the best metal that the world has to offer. According to many statistics, Finland has the most metal bands per person with for every 4 people there’s 1 metal band. That’s a lot of metal.
This updated repost of a Music Video Mania I did last year will be the first part of a 2 part series. Next week I will take a look and give my opinion as to why Finland has so much great metal going on in the country. If any Finnish readers (or any readers) would like to give their opinion why Finland is so rich with metal, I’d really love to hear it!!! Enjoy the videos!!! Peace Love and Metal!!!
Germany is one of my favorite counties to visit. There’s so many cool things there. Beer, culture, history, Oktoberfest, currywurst, bratwurst, bier, castles, punctual trains, cool people, clockwork, and more beer. Germany also houses some amazing and influential metal bands. Today I will be bringing you some of the best Germany has to offer. Deutschland, du bist wunderbar!!! Prost!!! Frieden, Liebe, und Metall!!! Read the rest of this entry →
When watching movies I’ve been caught often saying “they don’t make ’em like they used to”, especially if I’m going back and watching a classic such as Ghostbusters, The Dark Crystal(or any Jim Henson movie for that matter), or Conan the Barbarian. There was something special about those films that gave a warm human touch to them, probably the fact that human hands had touched every aspect of the creation. I’m not saying that modern movies suck, in fact I enjoy them quite a bit, but you have to admit that some of the movie magic is gone. The same could be said about music videos. Back then(err, the 80’s and 90’s) making a music video was usually on a tight budget and people didn’t have access to inexpensive HD video camera or video editing software, but they got by using some creativity and imagination.
Here are some modern(post 2000’s) metal music videos that whether using modern technology or not give a shout out to an age past by incorporating themes, moods, colors, and techniques used in movies and music videos. Enjoy!! And if you know of any modern retro metal videos that aren’t listed here I’d love to know about it down in the comments!! Peace Love and Metal!!!!
Opeth-The Devils Orchard
Just like Opeth‘s latest album is a throwback to the sounds of the 70’s it would seem logical that their latest music video would do the same. It has that 70’s psychedelic exploitation movie style and I love the soft colors throughout the video. So, who else thought of The Seventh Seal(I think the chess board was a direct nod to that film, especially since it’s a Swedish-made movie and Opeth are Swedish) and Hitchcock, especially Vertigo?

A while ago on my personal blog(which I really haven’t been giving much attention to lately, poor thing) I started doing this weekly post where I chose some kind of theme and posted a bunch of music videos pertaining to that theme. It was fun to do as I enjoy music videos and making lists of things, but then I migrated myself over to this here blog and got a little lazy and the short lived Music Video Mania got neglected. Well, I am going to try to right the wrong and bring the series back, not on a weekly basis again but on a when ever I feel up to it basis(a couple times a month about) here on A Metal State of Mind. For today’s episode I will ctrl-c/ctrl-v one of my older posts and will send over some of my better episodes here and there as well as new ones popping up also, so if some of the things I say in the post seem a bit dated it’s because I’m lazy and didn’t go back and update things that I wrote. Hope you all enjoy and if you have any suggestions on themes or videos to recommend, let me know. Without any further ado, here Music Video Mania: Worldwide Metal!!!!! Peace Love and Metal!!!!
